What is the Difference Between Parental Leave and Maternity Leave?

Updated today

Parental leave refers to taking a leave of absence from work to care for a child, as commonly understood.

Sometimes parental leave (육아 휴가) and childcare leave (육아 휴직) are confused. In practice, what is often thought of as "parental leave" is closer to maternity/paternity leave (출산 전후 휴가).

Through this guide, learn the differences between maternity/paternity leave and childcare leave, and grant them to eligible employees.

Maternity/paternity leave is given 'before and after childbirth' and focuses on 'recovery from the physical demands of pregnancy and childbirth'. On the other hand, childcare leave is used for 'raising children' aged 8 or under, and focuses on 'reducing the childcare burden on workers'.
